Petro-Canada Lubricants launch new hydraulic oil

HollyFrontier subsidiary Petro-Canada Lubricants has launched its new readily biodegradable range of hydraulic oil.

According to the company, it is the first hydraulic oil in its class to fulfil the conditions set by OECD 301B for ready biodegradability thanks to a patent-pending formulation, which is based on ultra-pure base oils that have been severely hydrotreated.

The new fluid does not contain zinc or other heavy metals, which when leaked into the environment can cause persistent harm to land and water-based lifeforms, as well as contaminating water. In addition to minimising damage to the environment, Petro-Canada says ENVIRO MV R boats a superb level of hydrolytic stability and superior seal compatibility.

This contrasts with synthetic ester-based substitute lubricants and vegetable oils, which may need more frequent drain times and run the risk of corrosion and equipment damage because they often degrade quickly when exposed to water.

Petro-Canada President, Tony Weatherill, said the new product meant that respecting environmental standards need not involve compromising performance, adding that ENVIRO MV R:

“Can enable extended drain intervals, minimise maintenance and maximise savings. To have developed an innovative and environmentally friendly solution, the first of its kind, with the performance benefits of a premium mineral-oil-based product is testament to our research and development team.”

Petro-Canada says the new product offers an environmentally friendly option for mining operators, but it should also be relevant to other environmentally sensitive sectors, such as waste management, forestry, agriculture, offshore drilling and construction, as well as manufacturing in general.
