Malaysia-based oil and lubricant company Petronas has celebrated its 50th anniversary by welcoming the Mercedes–AMG Petronas Formula 1 team to the iconic Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur.

Toto Wolff, the team’s principal, attended the event, and met again with 43 people who had previously interned with the team. The six-month internship programme has been run by Mercedes and Petronas, which provides bespoke lubricant solutions to the team. Since 2011, it has enabled some of the most talented young people in Malaysia to experience working at the F1 team’s UK headquarters. Applications are currently open for the latest cohort, who will be heading to Brackley next year.

Three of the former interns joined Wolff in a panel session, two of which had interned with the team this year, while the third now works at Petronas as a manager. During the session, they reminisced about how the programme had helped them to succeed.

Siti Azlina Abd Latif, the strategic communications senior general manager at Petronas, said:

“We are happy to have the team celebrate our 50th anniversary with us. Together with Mercedes, Petronas will keep pushing boundaries with our Fluid Technology Solutions through innovative offerings, as we progress in our energy transition journey. This has been our legacy since the partnership was established 15 years ago.”

Team drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton also participated in a separate question-and-answer session with 900 employees at Petronas, during which they discussed how the partnership between Petronas and Mercedes had delivered success both on and off the track.
