The Malaysian company Petronas has expanded its portfolio of products for enabling advanced materials with the launch of a third solution based on graphene.
The new additive, ProTough+, has been created to improve the mechanical properties of composite materials, thereby improving their strength.
This, in turn, allows components to be reduced in weight, something that Petronas says is vital for supporting hydrogen mobility and other low-carbon solutions.
The company says that ProTough+ has been tested on polymers reinforced with carbon fibre and been found to improve the tensile strength by over 35%. It says this will allow lighter products to be made more cheaply thanks to less material being needed to achieve the same strength.
Dr Mahpuzah Abai, the CEO for technology ventures at Petronas, said the development of the new product reflected the company’s dedication to creating innovative solutions that support sustainable practices by addressing pain points for business, improving operations and adding value. He also said:
“We look forward to providing business solutions with technology and innovation through our strategic collaboration with HyPerComp Engineering. We are confident that the outcome of our joint development will offer the competitive edge that meets the needs of our stakeholders and customers.”
The launch of ProTough+ adds to Petronas’s extensive range of lubricant, coolant and grease products, as well as fellow graphene-based solutions ProShield+ and ProCharge+. In Birmingham at the Advanced Materials Show, Petronas also announced a new agreement for joint development with HyPerComp Engineering Inc., whereby the latter will assess using the solution through additional performance tests.
