Tech giant Microsoft has extended its collaboration with Petronas to cover the artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem through the signing of a new memorandum of understanding (MoU).
The MoU was signed at Energy Asia 2025 in a ceremony on the sidelines. Ir Ts Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof, a senior vice president for relevant projects at Petronas, and Laurence Si, the managing director of Microsoft Malaysia, signed for their respective companies.
Ir Ts Mohd Yusri said innovation was not just about technology at Petronas, which makes advanced lubricants like agricultural oil. He added that it was about creating a more sustainable, cleaner and smarter future – not just for organisations, but also for people and the nation. He said Microsoft shared its commitment, adding:
“By harnessing our joint expertise in innovation and sustainability, we are steadfast in advancing adoption of AI and Cloud capabilities in a manner that promotes sustainable energy practices, in support of Malaysia’s aspirations of building an AI economy with a robust ecosystem in which everyone thrives.”
The collaboration between the two companies will involve identifying new opportunities to innovate the energy industry and take advantage of AI technologies through Microsoft’s recently launched regional Cloud services. This could involve enhancing sustainability and operational efficiency through technologies like Cloud computing, Microsoft Copilot, cybersecurity, Agentic AI and data analytics.
The new initiative is just one of many examples in the energy industry where digital technologies are being leveraged to achieve new levels of efficiency and safety. Petronas says it also wants to use AI for societal benefit.
