In what could potentially help ensure the future of the UK automotive industry, battery firm Britishvolt has teamed up with Prologis, a real estate and logistics company, to establish a new facility in the West Midlands to further battery cell technology.
With the UK and Europe set to increasingly shift to electric vehicles (EVs) over the coming decade, competitive domestic battery production is believed to be important for future car production. The new facility will focus on developing new electro chemistries and cell formats for next-generation, production-ready batteries. This should then bring down the cost of batteries for EVs while offering superior performance.
With the West Midlands being a traditional hub for the automotive industry, a battery ecosystem is also emerging, with the Advanced Propulsion Centre, WMG and UK Battery Industrialisation Centre all being based there. The new Britishvolt facility will add to this and complement the company’s gigafactory in Northumberland.
