Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm, Seagreen in the Firth of Forth about 17 miles off the Angus coast, is now operational according to operator SSE Renewables and partner TotalEnergies.
All 114 Vestas V164 turbines, each of which has a capacity of 10 MW, are now online and providing the UK National Grid with renewable clean energy. The total capacity of the wind farm is around 1.1 GW, enough to power around 1.6 million homes. Furthermore, the reduction in the need for power generated from fossil fuels should prevent more than two million tonnes of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere.
Seagreen also has the distinction of being the world’s deepest fixed-bottom wind farm, with its foundations being as deep as 58.7 metres below sea level. It exports electricity to land at Carnoustie through three subsea cables before using 11 miles of underground cabling to connect to the UK grid via a new substation near Dundee at Tealing.
TotalEnergies’ CEO and Chairman, Patrick Pouyanné, said in a statement:
