Shell Aviation has confirmed that it will be changing the name of one of its aviation oil products, with AeroShell Grease 33MS set to be renamed AeroShell Grease 64 from now on.
The reason given for this decision is that both original equipment manufacturers and customers have pointed out that the previous product name bore a very close similarity to the company’s AeroShell Grease 33 product.
While this may not seem like a serious problem to many observers, those within the industries that use and sell these products were concerned that the incorrect grease could end up being accidentally applied.
It has also been suggested that distributors and customers might order the wrong grease, for this same reason, with the number of issues being raised over the name similarity have led Shell to act.
The new name, AeroShell Grease 64, is derived from the final two numbers featured in the product’s approval specification – MIL-G-21164D – but Shell has indicated that the grease itself will remain the same.
Alongside aviation industry oils like those featured in the AeroShell range, the company is also noted for general purpose greases such as Shell Gadus S2 V100 3. The AeroShell products are currently used by many global commercial operators, due to the excellent anti-wear and anti-corrosion performance that they provide.
Shell has stated that the process of switching to the new name will be a measured one, with the transition taking place alongside the development of new packaging and labels. The product’s new name is already being used in the latest AeroShell Book.
