Energy and lubricant company TotalEnergies has announced that it is acquiring a Finnish company that focuses on producing re-refined base oils (RRBOs).
Tecoil created its own European network for gathering used lubricant products. It uses these to supply its Hamina plant in eastern Finland, which currently has the capacity to produce 50,000 tons of RRBOs each year. The company’s process for regenerating used oil is said to be the most efficient currently in the market.
Tecoil uses an optimised “re-refining” process to take used oils and treat them to produce base oils that have properties equivalent to those of high-quality virgin base oils. These RRBOs can then be used to make new lubricant products that meet customers’ performance demands while also enhancing sustainability and circularity. They also have a significantly lower carbon footprint when compared to products made from virgin base oils.
TotalEnergies’ senior vice-president for specialties and lubricants, Pierre Duhot, added that bringing Tecoil into TotalEnergies would allow it to speed up:
“…the use of RRBOs in the production of our high-end lubricants to meet our customers’ growing demand for increasingly high-performance, environmentally friendly products. We are delighted to welcome the Tecoil teams and combine their know-how in base oil processing with TotalEnergies’ recognised expertise in the production and distribution of lubricants.”
Tecoil CEO Juha Kokko welcomed the prospect of joining TotalEnergies, saying it would help Tecoil to further develop and strengthen its activities by combining the two companies’ knowledge and expertise in the lubrication sector.
