Integrated energy company TotalEnergies has announced a new partnership with Mistral to develop new AI (artificial intelligence) models for the exploration and development of hydrocarbon reservoirs.
Taking advantage of advancements in AI like agentic AI, the new joint venture will combine TotalEnergies’ extensive experience with a massive amount of data. This amounts to almost a century’s worth of expertise and geoscientific knowledge in engineering reservoirs combined with almost 10 petaflops of data. The aim is to create new AI models that can consolidate and interpret large data volumes. In addition to informing new development opportunities, this will also help enhance the operations of existing developments and extend their operational life.
A scientific laboratory will be jointly established as part of the three-year programme. TotalEnergies, which makes the Total metalworking and coolant range, will contribute the know-how of its subsurface teams. Mistral will then apply its technological and scientific abilities to come up with bespoke solutions to satisfy TotalEnergies’ specific needs.
TotalEnergies’ CEO and chairman, Patrick Pouyanné, said that areas like engineering reservoirs and exploration were:
“…where artificial intelligence can create the greatest value for our activities. By combining a century of geoscience data, the expertise of our teams and Mistral’s capabilities, we aim to develop a new generation of tools capable of supporting our experts in analysing the most complex data and in their decision-making.”
He added that the new joint venture demonstrated the company’s commitment to developing an effective digital ecosystem in Europe, something that will ultimately enhance TotalEnergies’ competitiveness.
