TotalEnergies has purchased West Burton Energy, which owns and operates a gas-fired power station in Nottinghamshire, for £450 million.

The West Burton B plant was commissioned in 2013 and is one of the most advanced power plants in the UK. It has a total output of 1.3 GW from three combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGT) and supplies around 1.8 million homes in the UK. In 2018, a battery storage system with a 49 MW capacity was added to the plant.

The acquisition of flexible power generation capacity complements the renewable power generation that TotalEnergies has in the UK by enabling it to mitigate the intermittency and supply a stable stream of electricity to its customers. TotalEnergies, which makes the Total lubricant and metalworking range, currently has 1.1 GW of renewable generation with a further 4.5 GW in the works. To support this, the company has estimated it needs 700 MW in flexible power generation from gas, so it plans to sell half of the assets it has recently required.

TotalEnergies’ president for power and gas, Stéphane Michel, expressed his delight at welcoming the team at West Burton B, adding:

“This acquisition contributes to our integrated strategy in the UK, which combines renewable and flexible generation capacity. It complements our 1.1 GW Seagreen offshore wind farm and allows us to accelerate development of our Integrated Power activities in power generation, trading and marketing in this market.”

He added that the deal would also directly help achieve the company’s 12% target for ROACE in this business area.
