TotalEnergies invests in wind project to support decarbonisation

Wind power

France-based TotalEnergies has agreed to purchase a 50% interest in the OranjeWind wind power project from renewable developer RWE, with the aim being to supply green hydrogen to decarbonise its refineries.

TotalEnergies will look to reduce its annual carbon emissions by approximately 5 million tons by 2030, and part of this will involve its refineries switching to zero-carbon hydrogen, so derived products like the Total range of coolant and lubricant products will have a lower carbon intensity. This alone will reduce annual carbon emissions by some 400,000 tons.

The 795MW OranjeWind windfarm is currently being developed 33 miles off the coast of the Netherlands by RWE. It boasts a number of innovations, such as subsea battery storage, floating solar and a subsea pumped-hydro storage solution. TotalEnergies will use its entire share of the energy produced to power enough electrolysers to produce some 40,000 tons of green hydrogen for its refineries.

Bernard Pinatel and Stephane Michel of TotalEnergies said about the development:

“We are delighted to [be] working with RWE, a major player in renewables, on a project that will enable us to develop production of green hydrogen, which we need to decarbonise our refineries in northern Europe. This integrated, innovative project perfectly illustrates our pioneering role in the energy transition in Europe.”

The windfarm is scheduled to go into the construction phase in 2026 and start producing energy in 2028. It is expected to support the Dutch grid’s stability in addition to generating green power and hydrogen.
