France-based energy company TotalEnergies has published its biodiversity implementation strategy and Environmental, Safety and Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA) for the Artic LNG 2 project, in line with its commitment to engage with society and be transparent about sustainability issues.
The company, which also makes the Total range of quality lubricants and metalworking fluids, has a 21.64% indirect and direct stake in the Northern Russian project. The construction of three liquefied natural gas (LNG) trains is currently in progress, and when completed, each will have a nominal capacity of 6.6 million tons per annum. This will help Asian countries reduce their dependence on coal-based power generation to meet their growing energy needs and reduce their emissions.
TotalEnergies’ CEO and Chairman, Patrick Pouyanné, said in a press release that as one of the energy transition’s prominent players:

This is why we have pledged to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including those related to the conservation of biodiversity.”
Pouyanné added that it was understandable that such projects had high expectations regarding safeguarding biodiversity and the environment, and that the company took its responsibilities very seriously.
The CEO said TotalEnergies and its partners were leveraging considerable resources to guarantee their exemplary implementation and operation. For example, gravity-based structures (GBS) anchored on the river Ob’s banks will host the trains to reduce the environmental footprint.
