Together with its joint venture partner AMNI, TotalEnergies has made a final investment decision (FID) for the Ima gas field offshore of Nigeria.
The field is in shallow water near Bonny Island, split between the OML 112 and 117 licences. The plans involve just one platform that will be connected to the Nigeria LNG facility on Bonny Island by a 15-mile pipeline. The platform will feature a simplified electrified design with power coming from the shore. There will be no flaring, and detection equipment will permanently monitor methane emissions.
TotalEnergies, which makes the Total metalworking and coolant range, says this will make for a low-emissions, low-cost development.
TotalEnergies’ exploration and production president, Nicolas Terraz, expressed the company’s pleasure at announcing the project’s FID. He said it represented another step in the company’s integrated strategy for natural gas development in Nigeria, adding:
“Ima demonstrates again our ability to unlock new low-cost and low-emissions gas resources, following the incentives introduced by the Nigerian Government for non-associated gas developments. This new project will contribute significantly to Nigeria LNG gas supply and create lasting value for its partners and for Nigeria.”
Initial production is expected to start in 2028, with it ramping up to 350 million cubic feet of natural gas per day to supply the Nigeria LNG expansion. TotalEnergies says the project will help develop the local community, with local companies receiving all the key contracts. It says that during project development, it expects to source about 60% of workers from local communities.
