What are the different types of air compressor oils?

Air Compressor

Air compressor oils – also known as air compressor lubricants – help to maintain the performance and longevity of air compressors. These are machines that increase air pressure for various pneumatic tools or applications.

They are manufactured by brands such as Solest, and among the benefits of these specialised lubricants are the reduction of friction and wear, dissipation of heat and prevention of rust and corrosion.

Different compressors have different requirements, so selecting the right type of compressor oil is a necessity. We will look at some common types of air compressor oil in this piece.

Mineral-based oils

Mineral oil is one of the main types of air compressor oil. It is manufactured from refined petroleum and is typically more affordable than synthetic-based oil.

This type of air compressor oil is best suited for light- to moderate-duty application, such as small, consumer-grade air compressors.

Mineral oils do a good job of lubricating and cooling, but during heavy-duty usage at very high temperatures, they may break down more quickly. Mineral-based lubricants are typically changed regularly as part of proper maintenance.

Synthetic oils

Synthetic air compressor oils provide superior lubrication under extreme conditions.

This type of oil is chemically formulated to withstand higher temperatures, resist oxidation and offer longer service intervals compared to mineral oils.

They are ideal for heavy-duty, industrial-grade compressors that operate continuously or in demanding environments. Though synthetic oils tend to be more expensive upfront, their extended lifespan and enhanced protective qualities can lead to cost savings over time.

Food-grade compressor oils

For compressors used in the food, beverage or pharmaceutical industries, food-grade air compressor lubricants are essential. These oils are formulated to meet strict safety standards set by organisations such as the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in the UK.

Food-grade compressor oils are usually synthetic-based.

Biodegradable compressor oils

Biodegradable oils offer an eco-friendly option. They are typically made from plant-based or synthetic ester formulations, which degrade more quickly, and are ideal for use in agriculture, forestry and marine settings, where oil leaks pose a risk to ecosystems.

That’s a mini guide to the various types of air compressor oil. Selection of the right product – taking into consideration compressor type, operations conditions and specific industry requirements – will help to enhance air compressor performance and extend the life of equipment.
