Scottish Power’s renewables arm has announced that an agreement has been reached with Spanish company Gamesa for the purchase of roughly 100 wind turbines.
These turbines are set to be used at a planned 239-megawatt wind power facility, which is being built close to Barrhill in the south-west of Scotland. Construction work on the facility is due to start this summer.
In the region of 250 people will be working on the project and delivery of the wind turbines is expected to begin in February of next year, once the site is ready.
Overall, this scheme, which will be situated inside both the Dumfries and Galloway and the South Ayrshire council boundaries, is costing £300m. It will consist of more than 90 wind turbines providing 2.5 megawatts of power each, ensuring the production of sufficient energy for 130,000 homes.
Scottish Power Renewables’ chief executive, Keith Anderson, told a reporter from the Scotsman:
“Kilgallioch wind farm will become our second largest in the UK and this year marks a real milestone as we approach 2 gigawatts of installed onshore wind capacity – enough to power over one million homes.”
This announcement is also likely to be great news for the suppliers of lubricants that are suitable for wind turbines, such as Mobil SHC Gear 220, as these will be needed to power the units once they are installed.
The initial exporting of power from Kilgallioch has been scheduled for October in 2016, with the facility expected to be fully operational by sometime in the following year.
