Iceotope, a provider of liquid cooling solutions for data centres, has started a collaboration with Petronas Lubricants International.

The aim is to jointly advance thermal management technology, to improve the efficiency of computing facilities, data centres and blockchain operations, and to help reduce water usage and carbon emissions.

The partnership will exploit both companies’ experience and expertise with thermal management technology to drive research and develop innovative new technologies for liquid cooling. As the world’s digital infrastructure continues to progress, the hope is to continue to meet the sector’s needs as they emerge.

Hezlinn Idris, the group chief executive officer and managing director of Petronas Lubricants International, expressed the firm’s pride at working with Iceotope, pointing out their overlapping expertise with liquid cooling, adding:

“Through this partnership, we will be able to offer a significant impact by enabling improved performance for the data infrastructure sector, without adversely affecting the environment. It is also a testament of progress for PETRONAS Lubricants International, as we endeavour to contribute to wider sectors.”

Data centres are becoming increasingly reliant on liquid cooling to keep equipment temperatures down to an ideal level. Petronas has therefore introduced a new liquid coolant called Iona Tera specifically for data centres.

The Petronas Iona range was originally designed for electric vehicles (EV), which rely heavily on thermal management to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation. The new Iona Tera coolant follows almost two years of research and development based on experimenting with various materials and chemistries.
