TotalEnergies signs 15-year contract to supply energy to STMicroelectronics

Certs Approvals

France-based energy major TotalEnergies has signed a deal with STMicroelectronics to supply it with renewable energy over 15 years.

The 15-year contract is the first of its kind in France, and it will see the supply of some 1.5 TWh of electricity over its course. TotalEnergies, which also makes the Total metalworking products, will supply the energy from its recent solar and wind projects. The contract also specifies a constant baseload supply of green electricity, so TotalEnergies will put in place the necessary infrastructure to compensate for any intermittency in renewable supply.

TotalEnergies’s senior vice president for flexible power and Integration, Sophie Chevalier, said about the deal:

“We are delighted to sign this agreement with STMicroelectronics, which demonstrates our ability to provide long-term and innovative clean firm power solutions tailored to our customers’ needs. TotalEnergies aims to be a preferred partner to support tech industry players towards their decarbonisation efforts, and this agreement showcases our commitment and capabilities.”

STMicroelectronics said that by 2027, it aims to be carbon neutrals in terms of its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and to some extent its Scope 3 emissions. It said the Power Purchase Agreement with TotalEnergies would help it achieve this.

While TotalEnergies is traditionally an oil and gas producer, it currently has the capacity to generate more than 24 GW in renewable energy and plans to increase this to 35 GW by the end of this year, with total production reaching 100 TWh by the end of the decade.
