Working out the energy efficiency of oil

With so many different high-quality lubricant oils on the market from some of the biggest companies, including Mobil and Shell, it is only natural that you will want to work out which of them are more energy efficient. Choosing an energy efficient oil will obviously save you money, so it is well worth taking the time to find out.

The energy efficiency of an oil has to be measured in terms of the cutback in energy consumption that is produces. This means that you will need to work out how much energy a machine uses when in operation. This applies to all machines, including the ones that transform one type of energy into another.

Observation in operation

Energy saved is calculated by observing what is used to move or operate a machine. An example of this would be the amount of fuel consumption saved when operating a combustion engine of the reduction of electric energy experienced by an electric motor.

Often, it is also possible to measure energy savings in an indirect manner, by establishing a reduction in a machine’s operating temperature, as this shows that the equipment is not working quite so hard to perform its duties.

What this effectively means is that you will need to try out any lubricants that you are interested in using, and see which one gives you the best results. Although this may seem like a hassle, and it is certainly not appropriate for everyone, it is actually an experiment worth carrying out. You could save a lot of money and ensure that your machines run more efficiently for longer by choosing the most energy efficient oil available to you.

Uniformity

It must be noted that when testing out various lubricants for their energy efficiency, various test conditions must be kept identical lest the conclusions you draw not be accurate. Conditions that must be kept the same include using the same regressing amount or oil level, testing in the same operating conditions and environment, and if possible, using the same methods and instruments to determine energy consumption between lubricants. If this is not possible, you should use as similar instruments, and this should give you the most accurate results possible. This allows you to make the best decisions for you, your equipment and your plant, whatever they may be.
