BP will invest a further billion pounds in upgrading its network of charging points for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), the Financial Times reports.
BP’s Pulse network, which used to be called Chargemaster, comprises around 8,000 charging points, including some ultra-fast 150kW rapid chargers. These are mostly situated on motorway service areas and the forecourts of petrol stations, but there are also some more dated on-street chargers. The company also installs chargers for home use.
BP, which also makes lubricants and the Castrol Rustilo rust preventive, previously announced plans to have 16,000 rapid charging points in the UK by the end of this decade. According to the company, a single such charger is equivalent to about 60 overnight chargers, with it being able to deliver enough charge for dozens of miles in mere minutes.
Access to electric charging points is crucial for the UK’s automotive shift towards BEV production and uptake. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said that 18% of new cars sold in February were electric, and this proportion is expected to grow over time. Sufficient on-street charging is needed to give confidence to buyers who lack off-street parking that is suitable for a personal charging point, while superfast charging coverage in remote areas is needed to support longer journeys in BEVs.
