Air Liquide, a specialist in industrial gasses, has joined with TotalEnergies in a project to decarbonise the production of hydrogen at TotalEnergies’ Normandy platform. The aim is to build on Air Liquide’s hydrogen network in the area to implement the industrial-scale capture and storage of carbon dioxide.
As part of a long-term contract, TotalEnergies, which was formerly known as the oil and lubricant company Total, will hand over operation of its Normandy platform to Air Liquide. Once connected to the latter company’s network, the platform will be optimised and developed such that 650,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions will be avoided annually by the end of the decade.
Speaking for TotalEnergies, President of Refining and Chemicals Bernard Pinatel said the investment at the platform in Normandy would assure its future in the long term by improving its industrial competitiveness, adding:
“We are delighted to partner with Air Liquide on low-carbon hydrogen projects so we can work together on reducing the carbon emissions from our industrial operations. These projects contribute to the collective effort launched in the Le Havre industrial zone and the Axe Seine.”
He also said this was entirely in agreement with the company’s aim of becoming a net-zero emitter by 2050. Air Liquide also shares this goal, and it has already installed its own carbon capture and storage solution at its Port-Jérôme hydrogen production plant. It will do the same at the Normandy platform, with TotalEnergies handling the transport and storage of the captured carbon, subject to approval from the relevant authorities.
