Automotive bosses to gather in Sunderland

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) is to host a regional forum at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland where the leaders of some of the UK’s biggest electric vehicle (EV) players will gather to be debate how the north-east’s automotive industry can be secured for the future.

Mike Hawes, the CEO of the SMMT, said that the region was a hub for automotive manufacturing in the UK:

“…making products that are sought after across the globe while sustaining thousands of well-paid, skilled jobs. The region has seen more investment into electric vehicle and battery production than any other in the UK, highlighting its importance to the sector, the economy and the decarbonisation of road transport.”

He added, however, that the north-east should not be complacent but rather maintain its competitive advantage and secure new investment to grow, create more jobs, and support the country’s transition to net zero.

Industry bosses from firms like car giant Nissan and battery maker Britishvolt will be there alongside local firms to discuss how the region’s automotive industry can continue to prosper. The region is thought to be well positioned for the electrification of the automotive industry, with car plants, battery factories, and renewable energy sources all set to be in close proximity.
