With the 2026 Formula One World Championship well underway, leading lubricant company Castrol recently addressed fresh challenges for fluid manufacturers supporting the sport.
The hybrid power units installed in Formula One vehicles are complex systems made with custom metal components. These bespoke parts interact with one another under the most extreme operating conditions to supply maximum efficiency and power. While working, these components grind into each other, and without correct lubrication from cutting-edge oil, engine failure is the ultimate outcome.
Castrol’s senior manager of original equipment manufacturer and motorsport technology, Joseph Payton, has spoken out on the latest demands that companies providing power unit manufacturers with lubricants are facing this year. He stated that a combination of tighter energy constraints and a massive increase in electrification are being used to make the reliability and efficiency of units on the track truly decisive.
Payton commented that while fluids have always been an important element, companies supplying lubricant are required to bring a greater breadth of attributes and performance levels than ever before. He highlighted that electric motor systems have increased potency in 2026, which presents challenges.
Castrol has had to develop fluids with the highest levels of thermal conductivity possible, so they can extract heat away from them, letting them operate at peak performance with the maximum dependability without deteriorating over time.
Castrol’s involvement in the motorsport this year has seen it supply a range of different lubricants to serve the AFR26 power unit for the Audi team.
