ExxonMobil Australia honours important milestone

World

The Australian operating arm of ExxonMobil recently had cause to celebrate.

The company enjoyed a landmark moment, having operated in Australia for 130 years and serving as a member of the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) for 60 years.

Originally a company supplying vacuum pump fluid, it was later renamed as Mobil Oil Australia. Since its founding in 1895, it has developed into one of Australia’s core energy suppliers.

After ExxonMobil Australia’s discovery of the nation’s first offshore gas field in the Bass Strait (Barracouta Field) 60 years ago, its operations have generated over 50 per cent of Australia’s crude oil output. In the company’s most prosperous era, it delivered 10 per cent of the Australian government’s total revenue.

Today, ExxonMobil Australia continues to play a key role in the state of Victoria. It supplies close to half of the state’s fuel requirements for transportation, while all its Gippsland gas from the Bass Strait is employed exclusively by the domestic market and helps power and heat homes and businesses across Victoria.

At an event to celebrate its longevity, Simon Younger, ExxonMobil Australia’s Chair, said he was encouraged by the recent Climate Change Strategy that was released by the Victorian government, citing its dedication to securing renewable and affordable energy. He said that ExxonMobil Australia agreed that reducing emissions while balancing renewable energy needs was critical to the future.

A division of ExxonMobil, the company is involved in both natural gas and oil exploration, marketing and production, and is headquartered in the Victorian capital, Melbourne.
