Malaysia-based oil major Petronas has attended a ceremony marking the launch of two innovative projects for the energy transition.
The energy transition and climate change are global concerns, and every country needs to find ways to address these issues while supplying its citizens with sufficient energy. The ceremony was held at the hydroelectric facility at Lake Kenyir, Malaysia to mark the launch of the Green Hydrogen Hub and Hybrid Hydro Floating Solar (HHFS) projects.
In addition to producing hydrocarbons and a range of lubricant products, Petronas also engages in innovative energy projects. The new HHFS project integrates with the existing hydroelectric facility to improve efficiency. Floating solar panels enable energy to be collected without sacrificing farmland. This can then take the load off the hydroelectric facility, allowing water to be conserved for peak periods or when solar generation is low.
The group CEO and president of Petronas, Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik, said the projects showed how the country’s ability to integrate new technologies with existing energy expertise was evidenced by the collaborative projects. He also said:
“By tapping into the promising potential for green hydrogen and renewables to complement the baseload in the national grid, this landmark collaboration will pave the way for greater energy security and diversity for Malaysia.”
The Green Hydrogen hub will take advantage of energy produced by the new HHFS facility to produce green hydrogen at scale. This could in turn be used to make derived fuels like green ammonia and methanol.
