Malaysia-based Petronas has announced its first delivery of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
The shipment will be used by the Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) in its operations. Petronas says it demonstrates its ability to provide a steady supply of SAF in Malaysia and its readiness to scale this up.
The SAF was blended locally at Petronas’ facilities to meet all relevant requirements and then delivered through the multi-product pipeline of the Malaysian Refining Company. The fuel was then used in the daily late-evening Malaysia Airlines flight to London from Kuala Lumpur.
SAF can be blended with traditional aviation fuel to reduce the carbon footprint of the aviation industry. Such a global industry needs supplies all over the world. As a producer of downstream products like hydraulic oil and other lubricant products, Petronas is well positioned to meet the local demand for SAF in Malaysia.
Petronas Vice President Ahmad Adly Alias said about the milestone:
“Petronas recognises its role in driving the global push towards decarbonisation, especially in progressing Malaysia’s net-zero ambition as a key enabler contributing to the development of future fuels. Decarbonising the aviation industry requires reliable pathways, and SAF represents one of the most immediate solutions available today.”
He added that the pilot scheme was part of a long-term strategy to advance the company’s in-house infrastructure and technology for producing the fuel. Combined with developing talent, he said this will enable the company to provide its partners with solutions that are both cost-effective and reliable.
