Biodegradable Hydraulic Oils
Hydraulic oil is a specially formulated fluid employed for various equipment and machinery to transmit power. It also performs many other critical functions in hydraulic systems as it serves as a lubricant, sealant and coolant – ensuring machinery operates smoothly and efficiently.
Today, leading manufacturers like Fuchs and Morris, among others, have developed biodegradable hydraulic oils to meet the needs of environmental concerns regarding inevitable leaks, spills and total system losses.
What is biodegradable hydraulic oil?
Biodegradable hydraulic oils are defined as hydraulic fluids that are specifically designed to be environmentally friendlier than traditional hydraulic fluids with a mineral oil base. These biodegradable alternatives are formulated using either synthetic esters, renewable raw materials such as vegetable oils or highly refined synthetic hydrocarbons. They can break down naturally within the environment, making them a suitable solution for certain applications where oil leaks and spillage can contaminate watercourses and soil or put wildlife at risk.
Why use biodegradable hydraulic oil?
Companies working in sensitive areas where a leak or spill could have a negative environmental impact should use a biodegradable hydraulic oil to minimise harm. Should oil spillage occur, the fluid poses less threat to wildlife, water and soil compared to conventional mineral oil-based lubricants. Furthermore, biodegradable hydraulic oils from dependable brands can also provide good performance. This includes high viscosity, excellent lubrication and oxidation stability.
Is hydraulic oil harmful to the environment?
Traditional hydraulic oil can be harmful to the environment. Standard hydraulic fluids are often petroleum-based and include chemicals that result in contamination of water and soil, harming ecosystems and impacting human health. Spills and leaks can result in the release of harmful substances, potentially causing ecological damage and putting aquatic life and wildlife at risk.
Which oils are biodegradable?
There are many different biodegradable oils that are used today in more environmentally friendly hydraulic fluids. These include natural vegetable oils, polyalkylene glycols (PAGs) and esters.
It is worth noting that while all these oils are classed as biodegradable, the performance levels they supply differ. For instance, fully synthetic biodegradable hydraulic oils contain synthetic esters that can reduce high temperature oxidations and gumming, while enhancing low temperature fluidity.
