BP chosen as favoured bidder for hydrogen project

Energy major BP has been selected as the favoured bidder to participate in the creation of a new hydrogen hub in Aberdeen. The city’s council announced the decision after a tender process.

The proposed Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub will represent the first scalable facility in Scotland for producing green hydrogen. Phase 1 is expected to start operating in 2024.

Aberdeen’s council already powers the P&J Live events complex with hydrogen, as well as a fleet of 60 vehicles and waste trucks and 25 buses that have been used by around two million passengers to date. BP, the owner of the Castrol lubricant brand, will now cooperate with the council to progress the establishment of the joint venture.

Jenny Laing, the leader of Aberdeen City Council, said local people would benefit from a more sustainable and cleaner city as a result. She also said the new hub:

“Provides us with the opportunity to create hundreds of skilled jobs and add millions to the Aberdeen economy. We already have a successful partnership with BP, which have advised the council on the delivery of our Energy Transition Strategic Infrastructure Plan and this exciting announcement builds on that work.”

Speaking for BP, its Head of Country for the UK, Louise Kingham, stressed her company’s desire to play a prominent role in the energy transition of Scotland. She also pointed out how BP’s more than half a century of expertise in North Sea operations will be easily transferred to support the energy industries that are emerging.
