As a lubricant technician, one of your most important duties will be making inspections of the machinery used at your place of work. It is important that these are carried out accurately, because a wrong result could lead to a major fault and a loss of money for your company.
In order to ensure your inspections, go as smoothly as possible. There are a number of simple tools that you will need to have available at all times, including a torch, level gauge, sight glass and water bowl.
Torch
A torch is particularly important for checking oil levels and analyzing any contaminations and wear in either fluids or machinery, so it is a good idea to get a good strong light to assist your work.
Sight glass
The best possible sight glass to assist you with your duties is a 3-D one, which will enable your torch to light from one side to the other, and shine through the glass without refracting much light, so that you can clearly see what you are doing.
It is essential that you are able to look at oil in machinery with a sight glass, because most of the time it is not possible or practical to take oil samples due to productivity issues. A sight glass will enable you to see what you need to see with minimal interference to other workers.
Temperature gun
A thermal camera or temperature gun is definitely another weapon you should have in your oil analysis arsenal, as using heat is another good way of working out whether equipment has a fault or not, and it is often an easier way of doing so depending on the type of machinery you are looking at.
Optical tools
If you are going to be checking oil by sight, then having a camera with a good flash facility and a high picture quality, a laser pointer, telescope and spatula are all good ideas as they will make the process much simpler for you. Overall, you will get more accurate results by having more tools at your disposal.
