Situation
The lubricant used in the Kaeser rotary screw compressor resulted in the formation of gummy deposits. These deposits led to a compressor breakdown every 3 to 4 months. At a significant cost, the compressor had to be dismantled for chemical cleaning, resulting in 4 days of production downtime.
Impact
During an on-site inspection by a Mobil Industrial Lubricants field engineer, the high operating temperature followed by strong oil oxidation coupled with poor water-separation characteristics of the oil was identified as root cause for the gummy deposits. Mobil engineers recommended Mobil Rarus SHC 1026, a synthetic compressor oil with an excellent oxidation stability and outstanding water-separation capabilities, for use in a wide range of temperatures. Nine months after the conversion, no such compressor failures have been experienced. Recent inspections show that components have been free of deposits and the bulk oil temperature dropped from 95°C to 87°C.
