Castrol has announced that it has received a No Objection Letter (NOL) from MAN ES for its new Cyltech 40 XDC cylinder oil.

The new Category II NOL complements earlier NOLs for its 140BN and 100BN cylinder oils to complete the range of Cyltech cylinder oils. The new oil’s extensive testing included running in a MAN BW 7G80ME-C9.2-TII engine fuelled by very-low-sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO), which has less than 0.5% sulphur content, for more than 2,000 hours. The tests confirmed that the overall cleanliness and performance of Cyltech 40 XDC was at an excellent level, and therefore recommended for MAN’s mark nine and higher two-stroke engines using VLSFO fuel. The new oil will be available later in the year.

Castrol’s Marketing Director for Global Marine and Energy, Cassandra Higham, said that with the marine sector moving away from:

“Relatively predictable, commoditised products to a more complex array of alternative fuels, lubricant choice has reached a new level of importance. Choosing the right lubricant, combined with excellent technical services including scheduling, monitoring and consultancy, can have significant impact in problem solving, realising quantifiable benefits and achieving operational efficiency.”

Castrol’s expertise isn’t limited to the marine sector, of course, as it also makes many other advanced products, such as the iconic Castrol GTX engine oil and the Castrol Hysol cutting fluid.
