Shell Marine selected to provide lubrication solutions to Hong Kong ship

Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), a leading container shipping and logistics service company based in Hong Kong has appointed Shell Marine to supply its integrated services, including lubrication, for the OOCL Hong Kong, which is currently the world’s largest container ship.

The OOCL Hong Kong has a cargo capacity of 21,413 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), making it only the third ship to be built with a capacity over 20,000 TEUs. Measuring 59m wide and some 400m long, it is propelled by MAN Diesel & Turbo’s (MDT) G-type engines, which feature an ultra-long stroke to reduce engine speed, creating the opportunity to design new ships with unprecedented levels of efficiency, both in terms of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The G-type engine requires close monitoring of oil performance, and the OOCL Hong Kong needs to operate efficiently in some extremely challenging conditions as it transports goods between Europe and Asia. Selecting the right cylinder oil is therefore very important.

Shell, which also makes heavy-duty industrial lubricants like Shell Omala S2 G 320, shared its experience with MDT’s G-type engines and helped OOCL in selecting the optimal product from its range of cylinder oils.

Shell Lube Monitor has also been integrated into the OOCL Hong Kong. This programme combines shipboard and laboratory analysis to monitor the condition of cylinder oils. With the help of Shell’s experts and tools, this helps operators to optimise engine efficiency and make decisions about predictive maintenance.
