UK-based oil major Shell has contracted TechnipFMC to build the tieback for a major upcoming UK North Sea project.
The contract covers the laying of a pipeline to connect Shell’s Jackdaw development with its existing Shearwater platform. The pipeline will be some 18.5 miles long, and according to TechnipFMC, it will employ pipe-in-pipe technology that has been developed for use at high pressures and temperatures.
TechnipFMC’s President of Subsea, Jonathan Landes, said about the new contract:
“We’re excited to embark on this significant project together in the UK North Sea. Our strong technical record and our ability to design, engineer, construct and install were key to our success in winning this award.”
The Jackdaw wellhead platform will service four production wells, with production expected to peak at 40,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, which could represent about 6% of total UK North Sea natural gas production and be enough to heat some 1.4 million homes. After passing through the tieback to Shearwater, gas from Jackdaw will land at St Fergus, where it could potentially be transformed into low-carbon blue hydrogen as part of the Acorn Carbon Capture and Storage project, which Shell is also involved in.
