France-based TotalEnergies has stepped up its decarbonisation efforts by calling on tenders to supply some 500,000 tonnes of green hydrogen a year for use in its two biofuel and six oil refineries in Europe.
The company has set itself the target of reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, which refer to the company’s direct emissions and those caused by its energy requirements, by 40%, compared with levels in 2015, by the end of the decade.
TotalEnergies currently uses grey hydrogen at its refineries in a process called hydrocracking to make jet fuel and diesel and extract sulphur from crude oil. Replacing this with green hydrogen will give a considerable reduction, but supplying it will be a considerable task. An estimated €14 billion will need to be invested in approximately 10 GW of renewable energy generation capacity and 5 gigawatts of electrolysers.
TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne said the call for tenders was rooted in the company’s desire to decarbonise all its European refineries’ hydrogen requirements by the next decade. He also said:
