ExxonMobil has already begun work on producing lithium in the southwest region of Arkansas with the aim of become a leading supplier of the metal, which is vital to making batteries for electric vehicles.
ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions’ president, Dan Ammann, said about the project:
“Lithium is essential to the energy transition, and ExxonMobil has a leading role to play in paving the way for electrification. This landmark project applies decades of ExxonMobil expertise to unlock vast supplies of North American lithium with far fewer environmental impacts than traditional mining operations.”
The company’s lithium will be sold under the Mobil brand to reflect its long partnership with the automobile industry in supplying lubricant and coolant products. Production is expected to begin in 2027, and ExxonMobil claims the project shows how it is taking a leading role in the energy transition
ExxonMobil secured rights to mine some 120,000 gross acres in southern Arkansas earlier this year. The acreage lies in the Smackover formation, which is thought to be one of North America’s most promising sources of lithium. ExxonMobil claims that vast supplies of lithium could be unlocked in North America through advanced techniques based on oil and gas drilling methods, and this lithium could then be used to support domestic battery production.
